Some Words of Advice

From Little Town on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder, written to her by her mother, Caroline Lake Quiner Ingalls, November 15, 1881.

If wisdom's ways you wisely seek,
Five things observe with care:
Of whom you speak,
To whom you speak,
And why, and when, and where.

Or, in the words of CJ Kennedy, "Never miss an opportunity to keep your mouth shut."

  1. Now what brought that on? I'm wondering to whom you spoke about what your shouldn't have? LOL!

  2. LOL I'm flattered. It's how you won the bet.

  3. And I was paid well on the wager too! :) Even if I did have to go someplace I never thought I would go to win it.

  4. Hey, I want to know the secret joke too (::insert whine::) Still good advice, even if I don't know what brought it on.

  5. I should probably stick that on my wall somewhere... lol

  6. Another quote of Caroline Quiner Ingalls that I've always loved is, "Least said, soonest mended." I've found that to be true so many times in my life.

Isn't it wonderful that Laura wrote down all these little pearls of wisdom that we've all seemed to have forgotten? I think I would have really liked Ma.

  7. Am the only guy to leave comments here? I feel estrogen-challenged just coming through the door. Oh well.

I like the quote and have been trying to use it of late without even knowing it. Now I know why it hurts so much to keep quiet - it's this thingy called wisdom.

I read Tony Dungee's book, Quiet Strength, over the past two days (sorry, Erica, I know that being a Chiefs fan that hurts, but it was really, really good). He talked about the wisdom passed on to him by his father, especially when he was a teenager playing basketball. He'd get real hot at a bad call by an official and start venting. His dad would ask him later: "Did it improve the situation?" Tony: "No, but it made me feel better at the time." Dad: "But did it improve the situation for you and your team with that official?" Tony: "No, but..." Dad: "If it didn't improve your situation, then it didn't help." 'Nuff said. I'm learnin'.
